Seeing-eye Dog Day

There are many different types of jobs that we have used dogs for. One of them is as seeing-eye dogs for the blind.

Seeing-eye dogs are trained to be able to do many things for their visually impaired owner. They can lead them places, pick up small objects that they have dropped, let them know when the height of a building is too low so they don't bump their head, along with many other things.

Seeing-eye dogs go thru extensive training to do what they do. They must then be paired with the right companion. Once paired the dog and the owner, go thru another 4 week program to make sure that they are a right fit for each other.

I have only seen a few seeing-eye dogs at my work, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, they are a working dog, so don't pet them. Also make sure not to purposely distract the dog from it's job. Lastly make sure not to try and ask them to do commands, such as sit. They are trained to only listen to their owner.
