President's Day

Can you name all 44 US Presidents? Most people can't. When I was in 8th grade my teacher had a great way to get us to remember all the presidents. It was pictures that would "lead" us to the presidents. So for example, the first picture was of a washing machine (Washington). Then if you opened the washing machine there were a ton of atoms in it (Adams). Then the chef's son (Jefferson) wanted to cook one of the atoms. It continued on through all of the US presidents. I don't remember the entire thing because I missed a good chunk in the middle when I had to get pulled out of the class room - so if anyone knows where I can get this, please let me know!

On another note, let us learn more about the Presidents!

- Even though we have had 44 presidents, only 43 people have actually been president. Grover Cleveland was our 22nd and 24th president.

-The tallest president was Lincoln and 6'4" and Madison was the shortest at 5'4"

- James Buchanan was the only president to never marry.

- 8 presidents died in office, out of those 4 were assassinated.

- Three presidents have died on the 4th of July (Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe) and One was born (Coolidge).

- Eisenhower was the only president to serve in both WWI and WWII.

- Every member of Teddy Roosevelt's family owned a pair of stilts, including the first lady.

- William Taft was the heaviest president, getting stuck in the white house bathtub.

- Woodrow Wilson would paint golf balls black during the winter so he could continue playing golf in the snow.

- Gerald Ford is the only president to become Vice President and President without being elected by the people.

- Andrew Jackson was the only president to have the national debt fully paid, but it only lasted a year.

- Jimmy Carter was the first president to be born in a hospital.

- James Garfield was the first left-handed president.

- Benjamin Harrison was so afraid of electric lights that he would have the white house staff turn them on and off.

So there you have it! Happy Presidents Day!

  1. Found the book that I was talking about that helps you memorize the presidents with a story and pictures. It is called "Yo, Millard Fillmore". And it is awesome! I have all the presidents memorized!
